APICS - Vancouver Chapter - November 2011 Newsletter

           November 2011 Newsletter

Message from the president

Our new year is officially underway now that we have concluded our AGM and have a newly elected board.  At the meeting we had had 38 attendees and considering our topic and speaker, I thought there would have been more. However I recognize that everyone is busy and cannot make it to all of our events.  We were able to conduct our first survey at the meeting and judging from the response, it looks like we are on the right path in providing value to the membership.  Look for some highlights of the survey in our upcoming newsletters.

We were very pleased to have Garland Chow as our speaker in October.  He provided an eye opening presentation on Global Sourcing and the necessity of calculating Total Landed Costs when evaluating were to source from.  He also provided valuable information on where global sourcing is headed over the next 10 years.  What we saw was that various items are and will be finding their most cost effective zones of manufacture in various parts of the world.  Also somewhat surprising is the fact that heavy manufacturing will likely be located in North America as the best overall Total Landed Cost.  On behalf of the Vancouver Chapter of APICS, I thank Garland for a very interesting and informative presentation.

It’s now time to look forward again to our next and last event of 2011.  I am very excited about having Chad Smith and Carol Ptak on Thursday November 17 for our dinner meeting and the following day November 18 for a workshop.  You may recall that in March of this year we were honoured to have Carol speak at our dinner meeting.  At that event we had 100 attendees.  This time she’s back with Chad Smith, her co-author on Orlicky’s MRP 3rd edition.  This book is selling rapidly and may become a best seller.  Books will be available for purchase at the dinner meeting and you can get Carol and Chad to sign your copy.

The dinner meeting will be a shortened version of their recent APICS Conference presentation and an introduction to the workshop, Demand Driven MRP, How to...  Chad and Carol have been globetrotting over the last few months presenting and providing workshops and the Vancouver workshop will be one of the first in North American.  This is a sure to be a “You don’t want to miss it” event.  As a benefit to members, there is a $200.00 discount for the workshop.  Members attend for $249.00 including breakfast, lunch and Carol and Chad’s book.  Students can attend at a reduced rate but do not get the book.  For more information check it out at www.apics-vancouver.org.  And don’t forget November 17 and 18.  You don’t want to miss out on lessons that can help you understand how to match supply to demand and maximize your resources for increased profitability.

All of our events this year are at the Hilton Metrotown.  Remember that it’s a short walk from buses and Skytrain and parking is provided under ground with 3 hours of free parking.  I hope that you can join us for a great evening and a valuable workshop.  It would be good to see you and I’m looking forward to meeting with you again.

A Chapter contribution brings success

Thank you so much for your generous donation for APICS Scholars. Your donation helped a total of 77 students attend the 2011 APICS conference!  Here is a portion of a thank you written to the APICS – Vancouver Chapter.

“I was so glad and excited that was selected as one of the 77 scholars selected from a list of 206 applications! I am currently a Chinese student at Algonquin College, Ottawa, Canada.  My major is Bachelor of Applied Business (E-Business Supply Chain Management, third year).

This conference experience has made a significant impact on me.  I think it is essential to share some of my experience with you:

I met lots of friends from all over the world, from different industries

I got an amazing professional training during the conference

I am much clearer and more confident about my future career and my goal after this conference

I got job interviews and plenty of opportunities

I gained lots of “NEW BLOOD” from those sessions

In a word, it is amazing! Could you also please share my experience with other colleagues and chapter officers? I really want to also let them know what a great contributions you did!

Again, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart!” - XuanXian(Gavin) Li

On behalf of the APICS-Vancouver Chapter members, thank you for your continued support to help foster education and networking within the industry. This important event and feedback is a credit to the support you have contributed to the organization as a member.

November is all about “Demand Driven MRP”

The APICS – Vancouver Chapter is proud to present two of the best events in 2011 with Chad Smith, and Carol Ptak.  Register for the workshop on November 18th from 9:00am – 5:00pm and get a free copy of Orlicky's Material Requirements Planning 3/E to be signed. APICS members get a $200 discount for the workshop!

The workshop will describe and clarify the poor business results embedded in most of today’s demand and supply planning systems; discusses the core problems causing the results; present and detail an alternative demand driven structure for planning and controlling materials flow; and presents initial results from actual implementations. This new solution helps companies tackle three pervasive 21st Century problems: unacceptable inventory performance; unacceptable service level performance; and high related expenses and waste.

APICS - Operations Management - Vancouver Chapter October 2011 Edition Newsletter

October 2011 Newsletter

Message from the president

We made it.  Our first dinner meeting for the 2011 – 2012 season is in the book.  What a night we had and if you missed it, you missed an informative and valuable evening.  To launch our season at our new location we offered a 2 for 1 with members bringing non member for free.  We also had an open bar.  That’s right we bought drinks for everyone that night.  However future events will have a bartender and cash bar.  Another note for members; did you notice that we reduced the price?  Last year it was $45 for members.  This year it’s $40 and for everyone the first 3 hours of parking are free underground.

Last year we were on a Supply Chain Journey with our “How to” series of meetings and this year we’re looking at the Supply Chain again as well as Operations.  In our changing world and a shift to a new normal, it is difficult to separate this two functions.  More and more we need to be thinking how to merge operations and supply into a cohesive strategy that can provide the lowest costs and the greatest speed to the customer with top quality.

APICS members understand this better than others because we are involved on a daily basis with operations and supply chain.  APICS is a recognised leader in these fields with our CPIM and CSCP designation.  For our next dinner meeting we are pleased to have Garland Chow as presenter on Global Sourcing.  I’m sure that we will all go back to work with some new insight on strategies for sourcing.

Every October it’s time for you our members to have a review of the books and elect your next board.  We have managed well and have a great team ready to carry on our programs.  It’s going to be a great night.  I look forward to seeing you on October 20. Thank you for the continued support.

Sincerely,

James Cook

Summary of the September 21st, 2011 PDM

Anson Frost presented many good ideas and strategies for employees to cope with their tasks in the workplace. For the benefit of those who may have missed the presentation, here are some of the key takeaways from his speech.

The first and major point is about planning ahead. Take the time to set tomorrow’s day before you leave work. It is much more manageable to forecast your next day’s activities in the calm before you leave as opposed to scrambling the next morning.  Separate your activities into ‘where you need to be’ and ‘what you need to do’. While simple, this framework will allow you to visualize and logically plan out your day more effectively.

In addition, Anson mentioned a labelling system that would help prioritize tasks that needed to be done. Known as the 4D’s, this simple system distinguished tasks by whether a person had to “Do it Now”, “Delay or Defer”, “Delegate” and “Destroy”. Often time’s employees mislabel their tasks resulting in overloading resources on unimportant ones and under investing time for those that really matter. Properly labelling activities will help you stay on track and ensuring that your focus is where it needs to be.  Keeping processes simple often yields the best results...

Lastly, Anson touched on the importance of technology. Technology is a great supplement and tool for practicing time management. Software such as Microsoft Outlook, Google calendar and other time keeping technologies can definitely bolster your day. He cautioned, however, that in the end these are still just tools. A functioning tool wielded improperly can still produce disastrous results. Understanding the limits and purpose of these tools will generate the most benefit.

APICS Vancouver presents October 20th 2011:

Off Shore versus Near Shoring versus Local Sourcing: It’s All Global Sourcing

Topic Summary

The environment in which firms have made an off shore sourcing decision in the past has changed and will continue to change.  This may call for a rethinking of sourcing strategy and firms who conduct a total landed cost evaluation may find a domestic or near sourcing/near shoring strategy beneficial to the firm.  This session reviews recent trends and consolidates best practice studies to help firms evaluate whether firm should reconsider their off shore sourcing strategy.

By attending this presentation you will learn the following:

  • What is near sourcing and near shoring and what is the trend?
  • Who is practicing near shoring?
  • What are the characteristics of industry sectors or products that are moving back all or some production to North America?
  • What are the factors that need to be considered in a Total Landed Cost evaluation?
  • Where are these factors moving in the next 5 years?
  • How competitive is near shoring from Mexico with off shore sourcing from China?

About the presenter

Dr. Garland Chow is Associate Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management and Director of the Bureau of Intelligent Transportation Systems and Freight Security at the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia. He earned his BS and MBA degrees from the University of Maryland and doctorate from Indiana University. Garland is an appointed board member of the Purchasing Management Association of Canada and active member of the Supply Chain Logistics Association of Canada.  He has published over 200 articles and reports in the supply chain field and taught academic and executive programs in over 10 countries.

                                DDMRP Workshop

Topic Summary

Carol Ptak and Chad Smith, authors of Orlicky’s Material Requirements Planning 3/E, (McGraw-Hill, 2011) will offer an in-depth exploration of the logic behind the innovative and groundbreaking multi-echelon inventory and materials planning and execution method known as Demand Driven MRP (DDMRP).

The workshop is divided into two sections:

Section 1, MRP in the Modern World, answers four critical questions:

1.             Is MRP still relevant?

2.             Is MRP failing because it is flawed or poorly implemented?

3.             Why do pull oriented philosophies like Lean come into conflict with MRP?

4.             Why has MRP failed to significantly evolve over the last 30 years?

Section 2, Demand Driven MRP details the blueprint for the evolution of MRP in the modern world. The five critical components of DDMRP will be detailed:

1.             Inventory Positioning

2.             Buffer Profiles and Level Determination

3.             Dynamic Buffers

4.             Demand Driven Planning

5.             Highly Visible and Collaborative Execution
